PURPOSE:To stabilize the drying of wet gel and to enhance the yield thereof by using a buffer at a time for drying wet gel in case of producing glass by a sol-gel method. CONSTITUTION:In the production of glass by a sol-gel method wherein at least metallic alkoxide is used as a starting raw material, metallic alkoxide is hydrolyzed by using acid as a catalyst to produce sol and wet gel is obtained by allowing it to gel. Then a buffer is used around the obtained wet gel and dry gel is obtained by drying it. For example, the obtained wet gel is shifted to a drying vessel and fine silica powder is charged thereon in the prescribed thickness as the buffer for drying, and a cover perforated with a hole having a prescribed opening degree is put thereon to dry it. Thereby the convection in the inside of the vessel is inhibited and also the evaporation from the surface of gel is controlled and dry gel free of cracks is obtained. |
