Gel-forming organophilic layer silicate, process for its preparation and use

Gel-forming organophilic layer silicate whose exchangeable cations have been wholly or partly replaced by a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula <IMAGE> where R1 and R2 can be identical or different and denote C6 C30-alkyl or C6-C30-alkenyl, R3 denotes C1-C6-alkyl, R4 denotes C1-C6-alkyl, A denotes the group -C2H4- or -C3H6- and n denotes 1 or 2. These organically modified layer silicates are used as thixotroping agents, for example for surface coatings and antirust primers.
