PURPOSE:To obtain a high density recording medium performing high density recording and regeneration under vacuum using electron beam, charged particle beam or neutral particle beam, by forming a multilayer structure wherein atom layers comprising at least two kinds of elements different in a secondary electron discharge characteristic and not substantially forming an alloy mutually between adjacent atom layers are alternately stacked. CONSTITUTION:As at least two kinds of atom layers different in a secondary electron discharge characteristic, a first atom layer 2, a second atom layer 3, a first atom layer 4 and a second atom layer 5 are alternately repeatedly stacked on a support 1 to form a recording medium having a four-layered structure. Recording beam is allowed to irradiate this recording medium to remove a part of the second atom layer 5 being the uppermost layer to form a recording part 6. Regenerating beam is allowed to irradiate the surface of the recording medium having information recorded thereon and, by reading the difference between the discharge characteristic of the secondary electron discharged from the recording part 6a of the first atom layer 4 and that of the secondary electron discharged from the second atom layer 5 of the uppermost layer, the regeneration of the recorded information can be performed. |
