PURPOSE:To select whether an ink ribbon is saved according to a document to be printed by an operator, by providing two functions, i.e. one for saving the ink ribbon and the other for not saving it. CONSTITUTION:When a ribbon saving mode is assigned by a KB (keyboard) 25, a space pattern corresponding to a space portion 12 formed between the printed characters is detected, and a printing head is selectively removed from the down state according to the space pattern. On the other hand, when a ribbon unsaving mode is assigned by the KB 25, the printing head is kept in the down state even when facing the space portion 12; in this case, the printing speed is more enhanced than that in the ribbon saving mode because the need for the up/down motion of the printing head is eliminated. |
