A device for the longitudinal stretching of travelling webs, in particular plastic films, a first plurality of driven rolls acting so as to restrain and a second plurality of driven rolls acting so as to tension and a stretching gap being present between the two groups. The technical problem is the provision of a device which keeps the width contraction as small as possible. The centre-point distance between the two rolls (23, 61) delimiting the stretching gap is between 1.01 times and 2.0 times the diameter of said rolls, and the gap width is designed so as to be infinitely variable. <IMAGE>
