A process for the release, dispersal and separation of solid deposits, specifically especially of organic and inorganic constituents from sludge-like masses and an aqueous suspension in a sewer, and an apparatus designed for this purpose, with at least one swirl device, introduce kinetic energy in relation to a suction system at least partially in parallel with the sewer direction and generate a swirling and directed flow deflection in the direction of flow towards the suction system. At the same time, a discharge of the flowable medium past the swirl device is provided. However, a flow of the suspension from wall parts of the sewer towards its centre also has a forward-directed component of the introduction of kinetic energy. A framework has essentially, especially centrally, a suction orifice (13) parallel to the sewer axis, and at least one swirl device (18, 19) is arranged in the framework (8) so as to be essentially in the plane of the suction orifice (13) and adjacent to the latter, as a separating rotor (39, 40) having an axis parallel to the suction direction of the suction orifice.
