Apparatus suitable for the adjustable supply of solid particles eg oil shale to one or more receiving stations eg. a hydrocarbon extraction retorts, comprises an air slide 52, at least one or more discharge means which are not located at the end of the slide, each of these discharge means comprising at least two adjacent, communicating vessels 60,61 Fig. 1a or Fig. 2a, each having a bottom and fluidization means 58,59 in or close to the bottom, one vessel 61 communicating with the slide and one vessel 60 having outlet means 41 for communicating with the receiving station. Particles may be discharged from the discharge means when it is full by activation of the fluidizing means 58, possibly in response to temperature measurement in the retort. <IMAGE>
