<p>PURPOSE:To obtain a high contrast and to eliminate the need to improve the contrast at asymmetrical positions, etc., of a polarizing plate by carrying out a rubbing treatment for giving an angle of orientation which is narrower than 150 deg. when a liquid-crystal panel whose angle of orientation is >=150 deg. is formed. CONSTITUTION:The angle of orientation is increased so as to make the voltage dependency of light transmissivity steep, but when the angle of orientation is >=150 deg., liquid crystal molecules nearby an electrode are not oriented sufficiently in the direction of an electric field at the time of voltage application, so that light is not cut off completely. Therefore, when an upper and a lower glass substrate provided with oriented films are rubbed to obtain a >=150 deg. angle alphaof orientation, an angle beta of orientation is formed by rubbing previously. Consequently, liquid crystal is oriented at the angle alpha of orientation by rubbing, but if a voltage is applied, a residual twist is eliminated by being initiated by the angle beta of orientation which is formed previously and the liquid crystal is oriented in the direction of the electric field. Consequently, the contrast is increased.</p> |
