<p>The invention relates to a production system having a plurality of machining centres, a central workpiece storage station, a central tool storage station, a transport apparatus for the entire system in the form of first vehicles which are movable along fixed tracks and which transport the tools in mountings and the workpieces, clamping devices for grasping the workpieces automatically, machining-centre control units which are assigned directly to the machining centres, and a master control unit which controls the machining-centre control units. It is characterised in that the machining centres (1) are combined in groups to form islands (6, 7, 8), in that each island (6, 7, 8) is assigned an island control unit which controls the machining-centre control units of the island (6, 7, 8), in that a tool control unit for controlling the entire tool handling is provided, in that the tool mountings can be transported to the machining centres (1) by means of the first vehicles (2), and in that a bus or a plurality of parallel-connected buses, to which the various control units are connected, is or are provided.
