For determining the gas sealing quality of cylinder head gaskets the quantity of leakage gas escaping from the combustion chamber openings by way of the coolant openings of the gasket into the coolant circuit whilst the engine is running is determined by volumetric analysis. For this purpose a preferably funnel-shaped gas separator is incorporated into the coolant circuit downstream of the engine so that the entrained gas is separated from the coolant, migrates from there into a gas collecting vessel and a measuring vessel where it is electronically analysed and recorded, preferably fully automatically. In this way the gas sealing quality of the cylinder head gasket in the engine can be determined simply and economically, whilst at the same time further measured data on the engine are determined with the engine running. <IMAGE>
