Vapour and/or gas is conducted upwardly through holes into a liq. on a tray. In the domain of the tray toward the liq. inlet liq. movement is produced which equals or exceeds the velocity of the vapour or gas ascending from the liquid fue to buoyant effect while in the domain of the tray towards the down flow a flow rate is produced such that the layer thickness of the liquid exceeds the layer thickness in the domain downflow the other side of the inlet, and the velocity of the flow is less than the velocity of the vapour or gas bubbles ascending from the liquid.
