A magnetic gripping apparatus for gripping metal parts on machine tools, conveyor systems and the like. The apparatus comprises an external ferromagnetic yoke having a base plate (10) and lateral walls (11); a first and at least a second pole unit (13, 14) each unit comprising a main pole piece (17) having an outer face (13a, 14a) defining a work-gripping surface parallel to said base plate (10); and an intermediate pole member (21) between said first and second pole units (13,14) said pole member (21) extending from the base plate (10) to the gripping surface (15) and permanent magnets (18, 20, 20a) arranged at least between the main pole pieces (17) the base plate (10) and an electrical winding (19) encircling the magnets (18) between the main pole pieces (17) and the base plate (10), said permanent magnets (18), in an activated condition of the apparatus. providing a pole distribution on the gripping surface in which said first and second pole units (13, 14) exhibit poles of opposite polarity on their outer faces.
