A seat e.g. for a boat, hydrofoil, hovercraft, aeroplane, helicopter, airship, is formed with a compartment (10) which extends beneath the seat cushioning (3) and up into the backrest (4) so as to accommodate a life jacket, the compartment being accessible by a seated passenger. The bottom (6) of the compartment is hinged (13) to the rear of the seat and a door or flap (11) is hinged (12) to the bottom (6).
