PURPOSE:To eliminate the unnaturality and unsightliness in displaying a video image of the existing standard television signal with different aspect ratio by displaying one or both of the parts without video image caused by the difference in the entire circumference and the aspect ratio of the video image of the existing standard television system by means of an optional single color. CONSTITUTION:An existing standard television signal inputted from an existing standard television signal input terminal 32 is subject to signal conversion processing such as scanning conversion by a signal conversion circuit 34 and the result is inputted to a combined pattern generating circuit 36. The information of color and the range of single color selected and designated by the user are inputted from a signal color selecting circuit to the combined pattern generating circuit 36, from which a signal added with the single color to the video image of the existing standard television system 12 is inputted to a switching circuit 34. In applying the video image added with the single color part 13 to a high definition display device 35 of a high definition television receiver 11 by the switching circuit 34, the video image being the addition of the single color part 13 to the video image of the existing standard television 12 is displayed on the display device.
