A cassette loading system for a cassette tape recorder comprises a holder for storing a tape cassette, a first transport device for horizontally inserting the cassette into the holder, and a second transport device for vertically displaying the cassette holder. The holder is provided with a holder arm pivotable around an axis perpendicular to the direction of insertion of the cassette into the holder. A guide is provided for guiding the vertical displacement of the cassette holder with the cassette maintained horizontal. A detection device may be provided for detecting the completion of horizontal insertion of the cassette into the holder and a preventing device may further be provided under the control of the detection device inhibiting the vertical displacement of the cassette holder until the horizontal insertion of the cassette into the holder is complete.
