The invention relates to a programmable system for acquisition of a high-resolution image. The system comprises image capture means 1 and visual display means 2, allowing visual display of the images. It includes means 3 for calculating and controlling the visual display and image capture means, which are interconnected by means of a stand-alone intermediate circuit 4. The intermediate circuit 4 is intended to provide at least three separate operating modes: a direct-access acquisition operating mode, the calculating means 3 being stopped, or in interrupt mode, a second operating mode for processing the image to be visually displayed, in which the control or calculation means 3 are put into direct access with the memory-stored digital data via a first interconnection channel 40, and a third operating and visual display mode, with the calculating and control means 3 being put into direct access with the visual display means by means of a second interconnection channel 41, the first interconnection channel 40 allowing continuous transfer of the data to be visually displayed to the visual display means 2. Application to the analysis of images in bacteriology and to counting bacterial or cellular colonies, in the farm produce field, for pattern recognition. <IMAGE>
