A means for stabilising ladders comprises a transverse carrier which is fastened at the lower ends of the strings of the ladder and has supporting surfaces formed at its ends, said transverse carrier being releasably fastened on the strings of the ladder by means of two clamping devices. In order to make this stabilising means of simple construction and thus render it cost-effective to produce, the stability of the ladder being ensured in each case, the clamping device (5) is formed from an L-shaped bracket (16) and a threaded screw (8) which is bent off at an angle and provided with a head. In one leg (16) of the bracket (14), a bore (17) for the screw shank is formed and, in the other leg (15), a slot (13), open on the end side, is formed in the longitudinal direction of the leg (15) in accordance with the screw diameter. Arranged in the transverse carrier (6) is a bore through which that end of the screw (8) which is plugged through the bore (17) in the leg (16) engages. A nut (10) is screwed onto the free end of the screw (8). <IMAGE>
