An X-ray installation for X-ray diagnostic and/or treatment has an operating console with operating keys (5), specially for calling up from a program memory (11) organ programmed setting values for an X-ray generator, connected to an X-ray apparatus and a display device (1, 2) at the operating console. The display device (1, 2) is built as a multidigit alphanumerical display upon which the content of the memory addresses of a text memory can be called and displayed as a clear verbal text by actuating switches (S) and operating keys (5). In particular, texts on organs, on failures and status, operating data not constantly displayed can also be called on the display device (1, 2). The display device (1, 2) can also be connected to a checking and diagnosing system or to a switching matrix (7), so that test programs for electronic modules and components or new output linkages can be interactively run with the display device (1, 2).
