To operate a screen system, a means of control (DPG1) is provided, by means of which values can be generated for each of several controlled objects (W1, W2, etc.) which are shown on the screen of the visual display unit. The assignment between the means of control and the controlled object is done using a conventional selection device (CS), e.g. a light pen, mouse or similar, or using a key in the controlling part of the means of control (DPG1). The assignment is indicated by corresponding state displays in the controlling part and the representation of the selected controlled object.
