PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of data by cleaning an optical head or an optical disk when the defects of an information track occur more than pre scribed frequencies through a reading check carried out in a read or write time. CONSTITUTION:A reading circuit 8 reads data on an optical disk 7 via an optical head circuit 6 to perform demodulation of data, correction of errors and check for possibility of error correction. At the same time, the output of a photodetector of the circuit 6 is binarized by a comparator circuit 13. When this binarized signal is kept at a high or low level for a fixed section, a defect area detecting circuit 14 identifies defects as well as the vicinity of these defects. Then a disk cleaning part 12 is actuated when the defects occur more than the prescribed frequencies. At the same time, a head cleaning part 11 is also actuated. Thus the data reliability is improved.
