CONSTITUTION:In an engine equipped with a variable compression ratio mechanism equipped with an eccentric bearing 6 between a piston pin insertion hole 5 on a connecting rod 3 and the outer periphery of a piston pin 4, the ignition timing is delayed by a controller 23, and the compression ratio is reduced, when a knock sensor 30 detects knocking. When said knocking continues, the injection quantity of fuel supplied from injectors 34-47 is increased for a certain time, and when knocking continues as yet, the fuel injection quantity and ignition timing are fixed at the values in the same conditions to those in idling. Therefore, even if the variable compression ratio mechanism is in broken state, the load for the engine can be reduced, and breakage can be prevented.
