<p>PURPOSE:To ensure satisfactory tracking control even with a recording pattern containing a guard band between tracks, by shifting tracing loci of a pair of rotary heads by 1/(n-1) track pitches to the rotary heads producing the information signals respectively. CONSTITUTION:A reproduction signal of a rotary head revolving with a 90 deg.- delayed phase to a reproduction head is obtained from a switching circuit 21; while a reproduction signal of a rotary head revolving with a 90 deg.-advanced phase is obtained from a switching circuit 22. Then a tracking error AFT signal is obtained in a period shown by (e) by comparing the level of the fA component contained in the signal outputted form a multiplier 32 with that of the fB component contained in the signal delivered from a multiplier 33.
