The appliance has a signal recorder (1) which, to record the operating time, can be coupled to the machine (9) to be monitored, a clock generator and a decimal counter which is incremented by the clock generator in dependence on output signals from the signal recorder. The signal recorder (1) has a piezoelectric transducer (10) excitable by structure-borne sound and a magnetic clamp (11) held in close mechanical contact with the transducer. The magnetic clamp (11) is guided outwards through a housing orifice (14) and has a bearing surface (15) which projects relative to the housing and which, in order to record structure-borne sound, can be brought to bear on the machine (9) to be monitored. This operating-time measuring appliance can easily be mounted on suitable magnetisable surfaces of the machines to be monitored and can easily be exchanged. <IMAGE>
