In such a method, the analog signal values are compared with a number of reference levels and, when they correspond with one of the reference levels, a digital output signal corresponding to this reference level is stored in a memory. The stored digital signals are then processed further, for example for printing out a teletext or videotex page. Since, as a rule, the further processing takes place at a lower speed, the circuit complexity can be reduced by dividing the range of levels of a periodically repeated signal train into several level sections and comparing the signal train at each transition with one of the level sections changing step by step between a lower and an upper limit level. Each of the level sections is allocated a physically or temporally separate output signal and each of the output signals is allocated a memory location for each temporal phase of each signal train.
