Process for determining the remaining length of magnetic tape wound on to a spool. The sum of the times of a single rotation of the two spools is compared with a limit value tg for determination of the diameter Do. From this, one obtains the number n of turns on the spools from which the times TL and TR are calculated. The sum TL + TR = T is compared with the target time and from this the actual tape thickness is deduced, from which the true number of turns n and times T are calculated.
