To provide an improved detection method with a chemical sensor which is also novel, the latter is provided with a waveguiding film comprising a selective matrix on a substrate. For this purpose, it may be constructed with or without a diffraction grating. A beam, in particular a laser beam can be guided by the selective matrix with or without diffraction grating and with or without selective additional layer and fed to a detector. As a result of the reaction(s) or subsequent reaction(s) of the substance to be measured with the selective reactant(s) in the selective matrix as such without labelling substance, a change in the physical properties takes place as a result of molecular attachment(s) or of molecular rearrangement(s) and/or molecular reactions in the form of chemical reactions. After the onset of an interaction between selective matrix and the medium containing the substance, changes in the physical properties are measured.
