The invention relates to a device for the optical representation of a defect located on a light-reflecting surface of a workpiece to be checked, or of irregularity with the aid of a light source and a light-optical (photo optical receiver), and to a corresponding method for determining such defects. In this case, an optical projector for producing a light bundle which preferably has parallel light beams is assigned to the surface of a workpiece which is to be checked in such a way that the light reflected from the surface can be fed via a mirror, which is preferably arranged at right angles to the surface of the workpiece, to a light-optical receiver. The parallel light bundle falling onto the surface of the workpiece to be checked is limited to a defined area of the workpiece to reject by means of appropriate diaphragms. In order to prevent the incidence of direct scattered light onto the mirror, the beam path of the light bundle is limited by a shading device. The angle of incidence of the light bundle on the surface of the workpiece to be tested is 30 DEG to 60 DEG , preferably 45 DEG . For the purpose of simultaneously checking a complex, variously curved surface of a workpiece, the latter is assigned a plurality of optical projectors fr respectively producing by means of a corresponding number of mirrors a light bundle which preferably has parallel light beams.
