The subject of the invention is a paternoster-like storage and display device for articles 1, in particular for carpet or floor-covering rolls, having at least one load chain 7, endlessly circulating around chain wheels 4, for accommodating the articles 1, at least one of the chain wheels 4 being mounted on a drive shaft 5, and also having a drive 8 which possesses a motor 9 and a gearing 9' and is operatively connected to the drive shaft 5 and drives the latter. To improve the safety of the known device, in particular to prevent the load from falling off in the event of a defect in the drive, the invention proposes that the gearing 9' has a hollow shaft which is operatively connected to the drive shaft 5 for the chain wheels 4 and drives the latter and comprises two worm gears (working worm gear, safety worm gear) connected to it so as to be fixed in terms of rotation, that the gearing 9' furthermore has a drive shaft which is driven by the motor 9 and comprises a working worm which meshes with the working worm gear of the hollow shaft and drives the latter, and that the gearing 9' lastly has a safety shaft comprising a safety worm which meshes with the safety worm gear of the hollow shaft, the safety shaft being driven, in normal operation, by the working shaft and idly running along with it and ..., in the event of a fault, by interruption of the drive between working shaft and safety shaft as self-locking blocking and ...
