PRODUCTION OF MONO AND/OR DIALKYL-SUBSTITUTED NAPHTHALENE

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high conversion, by using a crystalline aluminosilicate, especially a faujasite-type zeolite as a catalyst and alkylating naphthalene or monomethylnaphthalene in the presence of a saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound can be produced by contacting naphthalene or monomethylnaphthalene and an alkylating agent with a crystalline aluminosilicate (preferably a zeolite having relatively large pore diameter, especially a Y-type zeolite) in the presence of a saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon compound (especially preferably decalin or bicyclohexyl at an amount of preferably 0.2-10wt% based on naphthalene or monomethylnaphthalene). The alkylating agent is preferably selected from an alcohol of formula I (n is 1-4) and an ether of formula II. EFFECT:The aluminosilicate keeps high catalytic activity over a long period and has long catalytic life.
