To eliminate the mechanical wear on conventional potentiometers, a space-saving pair of optically polarising media is inserted rotatably or displaceably between a light source and a light-dependent electrical resistor, the transparency of the entire medium carrier varying within the angle of rotation of 90 DEG or greater (depending on step-down). For multiple designs, the medium area can be fully utilised and good synchronism results. The low mass of the polarising medium allows rapid accelerations during rotation or displacement which facilitates accurate tracking in mechanical/electrical control loops such as, for example, angle-of-rotation transmitters in robots. An application in the sound studio field prevents scratching noises which can occur in the case of conductor-track-type potentiometers.
