The invention describes a water- and light-resistant wood stain in two components, the first component of which is an aqueous sodium humate solution which is applied initially to the wood surface into which it then soaks. After superficial drying, the wood surface pretreated in this way is treated with a salt solution whose cation forms with the humic acid anion a water-insoluble compound which adheres firmly in the wood surface and is resistant to being washed off. A suitable second component comprises aqueous solutions of calcium salts, barium salts, aluminium salts and other polyvalent salts.
