By means of the unit, private and public areas can be mechanically rid of leaves. At the same time, these leaves are disintegrated, so that the bulk density is substantially increased, the disintegrated material is excellently suited for composting and, as experience has shown, the leaves, if they are not transported away, decompose more rapidly as a result of the disintegration process. The leaves are carried by means of an air current through a cutting channel. In the cutting channel, rotating knives are seated on a shaft and disintegrate the leaves. By means of a blower part, the material reaches the outlet opening, at which it can be introduced into containers or blown into the open. The shapes and the arrangement of the knives have proven particularly advantageous.
