NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (X is halogen; R1-R4 are H, 1-5C alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or R1 and R2 and/or R3 and R4 are 2-6C alkylene or R1-R4 are bonded to form O-phenylene; Y is O or nitrogen which is replaced with alkyl or aryl). EXAMPLE:( 1'R,1''R,3S,4R )-3-[1'-( t-Butyldimethylsilyloxy )ethyl]-4-[1''-(oxazolidin- 2''-one-3''-carbonyl)ethyl]-azetidin-2-one. USE:An important intermediate for synthesizing 1beta-methyl-carbapenem compound showing improved antibacterial action. PREPARATION:A beta-lactam derivative shown by formula II (R is H or hydroxyl protecting group; L is free group) is reacted with a novel compound shown by formula III in an inert solvent in the presence of zinc powder to give a compound shown by formula I. The compound shown by formula III is obtained by reacting a compound shown by formula V derived from an amine shown by formula IV with an alpha-halopropionic acid halide shown by formula VI (X' is halogen).
