A contact-free centring arrangement for articles carried by a support (2) which can be moved in the centring direction includes two measuring units (21), each of which carries at the same mutual spacing in the centring direction either one transmitting and receiving element (22, 23) or two transmitting and receiving elements. The measuring units are coupled mechanically to the support by means of a mechanical system driven directly by the support and having the action of a two-arm lever (401, 402), in such a way that they always move over the same distance but in opposite directions. A drive element (8) which moves the support in the stated direction is controlled as a function of whether none, one or both ray paths between the elements of the two measuring units are free in order to move the support into a position in which the supported article is centred relative to a selected reference.
