摘要 Polymer comprises a linear charged polymer backbone and a sufficient concn. of charge compensating ionic dopant(s), linear polymer backbone being capable of undergoing reversible oxidn. or reversible redn. or both to form the linear charged polymer backbone. Backbone comprises diradical repeat units chosen from a heterocyclic ring system including at least one gp. 5B or gp. 6B atom, none of the ring C atoms being satd., a heterocyclic ring system including at least one gp. 5B or gp. 6B atom in which none of the ring C atoms is satd. and a connecting unit, and mixts. of these, in which the diradical repeat unit contains non exocyclic double bonds and the diradical unit forming stable ionic species, and the connecting unit is a conjugated system or atom or gp. of atoms which maintain pi orbital overlap with the heterocyclic ring system excluding fused 5,6-membered heterocyclic ring systems in which two heteroatoms are in the 5-membered ring. Pref. the gp. 5B or 6B heteroatom is N, P, As, O, S, Se, Te or mixts. of these, and pref. none of the heteroatoms occupy the ring fusion positions. Pref. when the heteroatoms are N no more than 2 N atoms are bonded with heterocyclic ring system, and when the heteroatoms are P, As, O, Se, Se or Te they do not occupy adjacent ring positions. Polymer are insulating materials, tractible and processable, unlike prior art materials such as poly-p-phenylene, polypyrrole, etc. all completely infusible and insoluble. Type of electrical conductivity (n-type or p-type) of desired electroactive polymer can be preselected, as can the redox potential and the room temp. electrical conductivity. Virgin polymers have excellent mechanical and thermal properties and are highly stable to oxidative degradation. Modification reaction of the polymers is reversible. Useful e.g. in the fabrication of prim. and sec. batteries, photovoltaic devices, Schottky type devices, etc.
