Bicyclic naphthalene compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> in which: A represents a methylene or dimethylene radical which is unsubstituted or substituted by a lower alkyl radical, R1, R2, R3 and R4 being H or 1-6C alkyl, or R1 and R3 form a methylene or dimethylene, when A is dimethylene, R' is H, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C acyloxy or an amino radical, R'' is H or 1-4C alkoxy, or R' and R'' taken together form an oxo, methano or hydroxyimino radical, R is -CH2OH or -COR5, R5 is H, OR5 or the radical <IMAGE> , R6 is H, 1-20C alkyl, monohydroxyalkyl, polyhydroxyalkyl, optionally substituted aryl or aralkyl, or a sugar residue or the radical <IMAGE> , p being 1, 2 or 3 and r' and r'', which are identical or different, being H, lower alkyl, monohydroxyalkyl, optionally interrupted by a heteroatom, polyhydroxyalkyl, optionally substituted aryl or benzyl, an amino acid or aminosugar (aminated sugar) residue or taken together form, with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, a heterocycle, with the exception of the compounds of formula (I) in which A represents an unsubstituted dimethylene radical when R' and R'' taken together form an oxo radical, and the salts of the said compounds of formula I as well as their optical isomers. These compounds find an application in the therapeutic and cosmetic fields.
