The invention relates to an anti-theft device for protecting a car radio unit using the release of dissuasive gases in the event of a break in. It is composed of a baseplate 1 fixed permanently to the console of the car radio unit, fitted with a cover 15 which is locked using a lock with a key 11. The base 1 comprises two notches 2 or catches which receive the lock bolts of the cover 15. The holes 3 serve to fix the base 1 onto the console of the car radio unit. The cover 15 has a slider (5 or 14) at each end. The slider 14 controlled by the lock with a key 11 with drive 10 and a return spring 12 unlocks the cover 15 thereby freeing the lock bolt which is integral with it. The slider 5 located at the other end in the event of a break-in drives the pinned cam 7 onto the tab 6 which activates the gas cartridge 19. The gas escapes through the holes 16 of the cover 15. The reinforcements 4 welded onto the casing serve to hold the sliders (5 to 14) in place and to prevent damage to the cartridge 19 by excessively violent snatching. The release of gas is halted as soon as the snatching effect stops. <IMAGE>
