Expansion dowels have a dowel body (1) which can be expanded by an expansion body (3), to be driven in, and is provided, in its expansion region which lies at the front in the setting direction, with longitudinal slots (4) and resulting expansion segments (4'), with a constriction (5) which tapers increasingly towards the front, and with at least one radially outwardly projecting, circumferential annular cutter (6) which is located near the narrowest point of said constriction. In order, on expansion of the dowel body (1) and the resulting cutting of its annular cutter (6) into the receiving material, to prevent receiving material which, for example, breaks off from penetrating inwards through the open longitudinal slots (4) of the dowel body, said dowel body (1) is enclosed, in its expansion region, by a thin-walled covering sleeve (2) which covers the longitudinal slots (4) of the dowel body, reaches as far as the annular cutter (6) and is secured against axial displacement and rotation on the dowel body. <IMAGE>
