Tetraisobutylene can be prepared by catalytic dimerisation of diisobutylene in the liquid phase in the presence of cation exchangers containing sulphonic acid groups in the H<+> form. The cation exchanger is predried at temperatures from 100 to 200 DEG C and at pressures of less than 100 torr. The diisobutylene is pretreated with a regenerable dried inorganic absorbent. By this means, the cation exchanger having particle sizes from 0.1 to 2 mm diameter can be arranged in a fixed bed.
