In a self-adjusting hydraulic valve tappet, which is arranged directly between a control cam and a valve stem and which comprises a bucket-shaped housing (1), which has a hollow-cylindrical wall (2) which is closed at one end by a base (3) and in which a cylindrical guide sleeve (4), concentric with the hollow-cylindrical wall, is arranged, which at one of its ends opens into the centre of a disc part (5) which with its outer circumference merges into the hollow-cylindrical wall (2) of the housing (1), and which guide sleeve (4) is located with its other end at a distance from the base (3), the actual hydraulic clearance adjusting element (6) being guided longitudinally displaceably in the guide sleeve (4), and a sleeve (14) emerging from the base (3) being provided, which externally engages over the guide sleeve (4), extends into the vicinity of the disc part (5) and at a point on the circumference forms a longitudinal passage (16) with the guide sleeve (4), in order to reduce the size of an outer oil reservoir and thereby to reduce the tappet mass, the sleeve (14) is provided on its end (18) adjacent to the disc part (5) with a flange which, by its outside diameter, is connected fluid-tight to the hollow-cylindrical wall (2) at a point (21) which lies closer to the base (3) of the housing (1) than that end of the sleeve (14) adjacent to the disc part. <IMAGE>
