The invention relates to a motor vehicle brake system with a brake master cylinder (10) to which a force is applied by a brake pedal (11). Connected to the brake master cylinder (10) are brake circuits (12, 13) leading to the wheel brake cylinders. A solenoid-actuated brake pressure retaining device (16) is fitted between the brake master cylinder (10) and at least one of the wheel brake cylinders in one of the brake circuits (12, 13). A control circuit (26) having a linked switch (28) operable by means of a clutch pedal (29), which allows the brake pressure retaining device (16) to be switched on when the clutch pedal (29) is depressed, serves for operation of the brake pressure retaining device (16). Connected to the control circuit (26) is a sensor device (30) which has a rotary position sensor (31) which registers the rotating position of the drive shaft (33) of a vehicle wheel. In so doing the rotary position sensor (31) transmits a signal to the control circuit (26) indicating any change in the rotating position of the drive shaft (33) so as to switch off the brake pressure retaining device (16).
