METHODS AND MATERIALS FOR VANADIUM IMMUNOMODULATION

A method for enhancing macrophage cytotoxic activity and thereby enhancing an immune response of a vertebrate by introducing a vanadate compound into the microenvironment of macrophages of the vertebrate and/or lymphocytes. Isolated macrophages or lymphocytes may be exposed to vanadate in vitro and then reintroduced into the vertebrate or vanadate may be administered orally or parenterally. Oral administration of a vanadium-containing dosage form adapted to promote contact of the dose of vanadium compound with oral mucosa has been demonstrated to have a pronounced immunomodulatory effect.
