The invention relates to a magnetic coating composition, to the preparation thereof, and to the use thereof for magnetic recording media, which is prepared by mixing a synthetic resin powder as dispersant and binder with the magnetic powder, optionally with addition of a filler, and grinding the mixture under high shear stress. Magnetic recording media which can be obtained in this way, for example magnetic disks and the like, have an essentially uniform thickness of the magnetic coating film of not more than 0.9 mu m and a surface roughness of not more than 0.05 mu m Ra before the final surface treatment and are distinguished by an increased signal-to-noise ratio.
