An EPROM is exposed to ultra-violet pulses to erase the content of its memory. Between UV pulses, the erasure process is interrupted, and the current memory content of the EPROM is interrogated using an interrogation device. After each interrogation, the erasure process using UV pulses is continued, until the erasure is complete. This procedure makes it possible to use only the minimum necessary dose of UV radiation to delete the memory content of the EPROM. The interrogation process ensures that, in spite of the minimal UV dose, the memory content is completely and reliably erased within the shortest possible erasure time.
