A compression and volume reduction treatment apparatus for solid waste comprises a main compression device with a compression sleeve (4) for receiving a waste vessel (10) filled with the solid waste and a press ram (5) for compressing the vessel (10) and waste therein. To insert a waste vessel (10) of outer diameter larger than the inside diameter of the sleeve (4), the apparatus has a precompression press ram (9) and a pre-compression tapered sleeve (8). The tapered sleeve (8) has at a lowermost end an inner diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the compression sleeve (4). The inner circumferential surface of the tapered sleeve(8) and the outer circumferential surface of the precompression press ram (9) are formed with grooves and ridges slidably engageable with each other. Steel drums containing solid waste are compressed and reduced in volume to form compressed blocks which can be stored in a steel drum which has the same size as the initial size of the compressed drum.
