PURPOSE:To prevent the confusion of a display by performing the display relating to a recording operation at the time of recording a video signal and providing a display means for displaying the time of the pass for recording from the start of a recording at the time of recording a sound signal. CONSTITUTION:A changeover switch 102 is a sound and video change over switch for performing a sound signal recording mode when it is turned on and performing a video signal recording mode when it is turned off and at the time of the sound signal recording mode, displays the time capable of recording the sound in place of a track number on a display part 24. At the time of the video recording mode, a sound compressibility counter is reset. In the operation of the recording mode, when the sound recording mode is set by the switches 101, 102, the time capable of recording the sound is displayed on the display part 24, the pass of the sound recording time is displayed as a residual time and the pass of the sound reproducing time in a reproducing mode is displayed as a residual time and the display of both the time is executed by the same display device. Thereby, a recorder having no confusion of the display contents is obtained with a simple constitution.
