Hydroxyalkyl polyethylene glycol ethers corresponding to the formula <IMAGE> (I) in which X is R3-CHOH-CHR4-(OCH2CH2)n-, R1 is a linear or branched C1-6 alkyl, R2=R1 or X, R3 is a straight-chain C6-18 alkyl, R4 is hydrogen or a C1-8 alkyl, and and n is an average number of from 3 to 20, with the proviso that the sum of the carbon atoms in R3 and R4 is from 6 to 18, are suitable for depressing foam in detergent preparations.
