A method for perparing hydroxy compounds of the aromatic and heteroaromatic series of the general formula: <IMAGE> wherein when R1=-COOH, -CH2CH(NH2)COOH then R2=-OH, -H, -COOH; R3=-H, -OH; R4, R5=-H with no connecting bond; R6=-OH; and when R1,R6,R3=-H, R2=-OH; then R4=>NH; R5=-CR7=CHR4, where R7=-CH2-CH2-NH2, -CH2-CH(NH2)COOH, consists in that aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds of the general formula <IMAGE> wherein when R1=-COOH, -CH2CH(NH2)COOH, then R2=-OH, -H, -COOH; R3=-H, -OH; R4,R5=-H with no connecting bond; and when R1,R2,R3=-H, then R4=>NH; R5=-CR7=CHR4, where R7=-CH2-CH2-NH2, -CH2-CH(NH2)COOH. are subjected to hydroxylation in the presence of oxygen, phenazine catalysts of the general formula <IMAGE> wherein R is CH3, <IMAGE> styrenedivinylbenzene copolymer X-=CH3SO4-, C2H5SO4-, Cl-, and a reducing agent performing one-electron reduction of the heterocyclic nitrogen of the phenazinium cycle at a pH of the reaction medium ranging from 2.0 to 5.5, followed by isolation of the desired product.
