The device serves for detecting the presence of a first part (1), which is detachably inserted with one end (2) in a prescribed position into an accommodating recess (3) of a second part (4). The outside (5) of the end (2) of the first part (1) is adapted to the wall (9) of the accommodating recess (3) of the second part (4). The end (2) of the first part (1) contains a recess (10) open towards the outside (5). The second part (4) contains a recess (6) open towards the wall (9). The recesses (6; 10) of the two parts (1; 4) are in a selected situation relative to one another. Located in the recess (6) of the first part (1) is at least one member (7) which generates or amplifies a magnetic field. Two magnetic field sensors (11; 12) are arranged in the recess (10) of the second part (4) at a distance from one another in a symmetrical fashion with respect to the member (7) in the prescribed axial and radial positions such that the output signals of the magnetic field sensors (11; 12) are equal or approximately equal.
