[Class 65 (i).] A buffer or supporting device for vehicle doors comprises a rubber or like member, housed in the door frame or door and arranged to operate in a direction more or less parallel to the plane of the door when closed, provided at its outer end with a wear-resisting part disposed to press against the edge of the door or door frame when the door is closed. In the form shown in Fig. 9, a rectangular rubber block 29 has a sheet metal wearing member 25 attached by indenting it into the rubber at 38, and is held in a metal housing 24, let into the door or door post, in which the member 25 slides; the protruding part of the metal-cased rubber bears against the edge of the door-post or door, when the door is closed, to support the door and take up resiliently any movement in the direction of sliding of the member 25. The indentations 38 may hold a lubricant. The space between the rubber and the housing at the back of the member 25 allows lateral expansion of the rubber under longitudinal compression. Complete detachment of the rubber block from the housing may be prevented by projections on one of the members 24, 25 engaging recesses or apertures in the other. The rubber block may be made cylindrical instead of rectangular in cross-section. The cap 25 may be made shorter than that shown and the rubber may then fill the rear part of the housing except for the provision of recesses in the rubber to allow of lateral expansion. In a modification, the cap 25 does not embrace the sides of the rubber, but is attached by a central web embedded in the rubber. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the cap is replaced by a metal plug 36 embedded in the end of the rubber and held therein by the rubber entering a groove in the plug ; in the form shown, space for deformation is provided by slots 37 in the housing. In all the forms, the metal housing 24 may be dispensed with, the rubber being placed directly in a recess in the door or door frame. |
